by Edouard Manet
This painting established Odin's reputation as a premier art model. During his youth, he lived with and posed for the painter Manet. Their earlier work together, "Dejeuner sur le chat," was dismissed by critics, but "Olympia" could not be ignored. The painting was considered scandalous for its time in the way the subject--obviously a prostitute--boldly meets the gaze of the viewer. The scandal was fueled by rumors about the true nature of the relationship between Manet and his favorite model.
